Character background and lore

Sesshomaru is a powerful daiyōkai and Inuyasha’s elder half-brother. Both are the sons of a powerful dog demon, but unlike Inuyasha, who was born of the union between a demon and a human, Sesshomaru possesses a fully demonic heritage.

Proud of his yōkai nature, Sesshomaru initially regards his half-brother with contempt and finds it hard to accept that Inuyasha has inherited Tessaiga, the powerful sword left by their father. This rivalry forms one of the series’ first major conflicts.

Sesshomaru, however, has no need for the shards of the Shikon Jewel to increase his power. His natural abilities already make him one of the most formidable demons of the feudal era.

His journey takes a dramatic turn after he meets Rin, a young human orphan. Whilst he initially displays almost total indifference towards humans, he eventually allows Rin to travel alongside him with Jaken. This relationship plays a key role in his development and gradually reveals a more protective side to his personality.

Sesshomaru also possesses Tenseiga, a sword inherited from his father, whose capabilities are radically different from those of a traditional weapon. Tenseiga is linked to the realm of the dead and, in particular, enables Sesshomaru to save lives – a role that gradually forces him to develop a form of compassion he once rejected.

As the story unfolds, his rivalry with Inuyasha also evolves. Without ever becoming truly warm towards his half-brother, Sesshomaru gradually overcomes his obsession with Tessaiga and develops his own power.

In particular, he eventually obtains Bakusaiga, a weapon born of his own power and symbolising his definitive emancipation from his father’s legacy.

From a cold and arrogant rival, Sesshomaru thus gradually becomes a far more complex figure, capable of protecting those dear to him whilst maintaining his aloof and majestic demeanour.
