Origin and historical context

The Supermarine Spitfire is one of the most famous British fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Designed under the supervision of engineer R. J. Mitchell, it made its maiden flight on 5 March 1936 and entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1938.

Its aerodynamic silhouette, elliptical wings and flight performance made it one of the RAF’s main fighter aircraft. It played a particularly significant role during the Battle of Britain in 1940, when the British air forces repelled German attacks.

The Spitfire underwent constant development throughout the conflict. New engines, armaments and wing profiles were gradually adopted to maintain its performance against enemy aircraft. It thus remained in continuous development throughout the Second World War.

The song ‘Aces High’ opens Iron Maiden’s album *Powerslave*, released on 3 September 1984. Written by Steve Harris, it describes an aerial battle from the perspective of a British fighter pilot called upon to take off on an emergency sortie to engage the enemy.

The track also became the second single released from the album. Its artwork, originally created by illustrator Derek Riggs, links the band’s mascot, Eddie, to the world of Royal Air Force pilots and the aerial battles of the Second World War.

During several tours, Iron Maiden introduced ‘Aces High’ with an excerpt from Winston Churchill’s famous speech, before an imposing Spitfire appeared above the stage. This staging has become one of the most recognisable visual elements of the band’s concerts.

The Revell model brings these two elements together: it reproduces the historic silhouette of the Spitfire Mk.II whilst incorporating Eddie and Iron Maiden’s distinctive graphic elements.
