The Qin army suffered a terrible defeat at the hands of Riboku during the "Battle for Gian" the previous year, in which Kanki, one of the Six Great Generals, was killed. In the New Year, general mobilisation was once again decreed and the State of Qin, eager to regain its honour, concentrated all its forces in Hango, where a decisive battle was to be fought.
