Origin and lore of the location

In *Howl’s Moving Castle*, Sophie discovers that the castle’s magical door provides access to various places depending on the colour selected by its dial. One of these passages leads to Howl’s secret garden, an unspoilt valley filled with flowers, lakes and mountains.

Howl reveals to Sophie that he discovered this place during his childhood and that he has gradually transformed it into a refuge.
