Origin and background of the characters (Lore)

My Neighbour Totoro is an animated film by Studio Ghibli released in Japan in 1988. It was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, with music composed by Joe Hisaishi.

The story follows Satsuki and Mei, two young sisters who move with their father to a house in the countryside. Whilst exploring the nearby woods, they discover several forest spirits, including the imposing Totoro. Kind and mysterious, he introduces them to a marvellous world hidden at the heart of nature.

The three creatures depicted on the jigsaw puzzle are often distinguished by their size: the large Totoro, the medium-sized Totoro with blue fur, and the small white Totoro. Their silent and reassuring presence symbolises the magic of childhood, imagination and the connection between humans and their natural environment.
