Character background and universe (Lore)

The hopping lantern appears in Spirited Away during Chihiro and No-Face’s journey to the home of Zeniba, Yubaba’s twin sister.

Upon their arrival in this setting – which is far calmer than Yubaba’s bathhouse – a strange, living lantern comes to meet them. Standing on a single leg, it hops along in front of them to light the way and guide them to Zeniba’s house.

Although its appearance is relatively brief, this creature perfectly encapsulates the film’s visual identity: an everyday object can suddenly come to life and become a spirit in its own right, without this seeming out of the ordinary in this supernatural world.

The scene also marks a significant turning point in the narrative. After the hustle and bustle of the bathhouses, Chihiro discovers a more peaceful, warm and almost rural setting at Zeniba’s house. The lantern thus symbolically acts as a guide between two atmospheres, leading the heroine towards a calmer and more introspective stage of her adventure.
