Origin and character background (Lore)

No Face, or Kaonashi in Japanese, is one of the most memorable spirits in Spirited Away. Silent and enigmatic, he first appears as a solitary presence before entering the bathhouse where Chihiro works.

Through his interactions with the establishment’s staff and customers, No Face begins to absorb the behaviours around him. In particular, he usesgold to attract attention and get what he wants, eventually becoming increasingly imposing and uncontrollable. This fascination with gold and excess is one of the most memorable aspects of his time at the bathhouse.

His relationship with Chihiro, however, is different: she refuses to be seduced by his wealth and shows him a form of compassion without seeking to take advantage of him. This behaviour plays a key role in his gradual return to calm.

The choice of a golden basin for this diorama therefore directly echoes this aspect of the character and his association with gold in the film. Surrounded by bamboo, No Face is here placed within a more peaceful and contemplative setting, which contrasts with the chaos of some of his most famous scenes.
