Origin and character background (Lore)

Jinshi is one of the major characters in *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*. He is officially presented asthe eunuch responsible for managing the inner palace, where the Emperor’s concubines, amongst others, reside.

He immediately stands out for his exceptional beauty, to the extent that the anime’s official profile states that, were he a woman, his appearance would be capable of bringing down a kingdom. This beauty gives him an almost otherworldly presence and regularly influences the way the other palace inhabitants react to his presence.

Jinshi meets Maomao after discovering her intelligence and her unusual knowledge of medicine, plants and poisons. He quickly realises that she can resolve matters that the ordinary palace staff would be unable to unravel.

He therefore begins to regularly entrust her with the incidents, mysteries and delicate problems arising within the inner court. The official website sums up this relationship succinctly, explaining that Jinshi brings Maomao the palace’s problematic cases so that she can resolve them.
