Maomao is wearing her usual outfit, consisting of a green top with wide sleeves, trimmed in white and red, and a long, deep blue skirt. Her matching green shoes complete this understated look, inspired by her daily life within the inner court. The full folds of the skirt and the slightly bent position of her legs lend the whole figure a natural and balanced appearance.

The sculpture also pays particular attention to her face, with her violet eyes, subtle freckles and dark green hair styled into short plaits adorned with coloured beads. Character background and lore

Maomao is a young apothecary who grew up in the pleasure quarter, where she acquired a thorough knowledge of medicinal plants, remedies and poisons. After being abducted and then sold as a servant to the imperial palace, she initially tries to keep a low profile, but her intelligence and keen powers of observation quickly attract Jinshi’s attention.

Her talent for analysing symptoms and unravelling complex cases leads her to become a taster for the concubine Gyokuyō. Pragmatic, curious and unconcerned with appearances, Maomao regularly finds herself caught up in the intrigues of the inner court, where her scientific knowledge enables her to solve mysteries relating to illnesses, poisonings and palace rivalries.
