Character background and universe (Lore)

Maomao is the heroine of *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*, a series of light novels written by Natsu Hyuga. Raised by an apothecary in the red-light district, she acquired a very thorough knowledge of medicinal plants, remedies, diseases and, above all, poisons from a very young age.

After being kidnapped and then sold as a servant at the imperial palace, Maomao initially tries to keep a low profile. However, her medical skills and extraordinary powers of observation eventually attract attention when she solves several unexplained incidents involving the concubines and members of the court.

Plants play a significant role in her daily life, both as medicinal ingredients and as potential sources of toxic substances. This theme makes the ‘Garden’ version particularly well-suited to the character, directly reflecting her work as an apothecary and her fascination with all things related to pharmacology.
