Origin and background of the character

In *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*, Maomao is a young apothecary raised in the pleasure quarter. After being kidnapped and then sold as a servant at the imperial palace, she initially tries to keep a low profile, but her knowledge of medicine, poisons and plants quickly attracts attention.

Curious, rational and unconcerned with appearances, she investigates the illnesses, poisonings and intrigues surrounding the inner court. Her intelligence and keen interest in toxic substances regularly lead her to solve mysteries that others would rather ignore.
