Maomao is the heroine of *The Apothecary’s Notebook* (*Kusuriya no Hitorigoto*). Raised in the red-light district by an apothecary, she developed a deep knowledge of medicinal plants, poisons and their effects from a very young age.
After being abducted and then sold as a servant to the imperial palace, Maomao initially tries to keep a low profile. However, her curiosity and talent for solving medical mysteries quickly attract the attention of Jinshi, a senior court official.
Thanks to her analytical mind, keen powers of observation and knowledge of pharmacology, she regularly finds herself embroiled in cases involving mysterious illnesses, poisonings, political intrigues and court secrets.
Behind her pragmatic and sometimes detached demeanour, Maomao harbours an almost obsessive fascination with poisons and remedies. This blend of intelligence, scientific curiosity and independence makes her one of the series’ most distinctive and beloved characters.
