Origin and character background (Lore)

Maomao is the heroine of *The Apothecary’s Notebooks*, a work set in a world inspired by Imperial China. The daughter of an apothecary, she possesses a wealth of knowledge about medicinal plants, remedies, poisons and diagnostics.

After being abducted and then sold as a servant to the imperial palace, Maomao initially tries to keep a low profile. However, her intelligence, keen powers of observation and passion for toxic substances quickly attract the attention of Jinshi, who begins to entrust her with various cases to solve.

Maomao stands out for her pragmatic, curious and sometimes detached nature when faced with the intrigues of the court. Whilst others are easily impressed by prestige or appearances, she prioritises analysis, logic and facts.
