Origin and character lore

The Catbus, or Nekobasu, is one of the most memorable supernatural creatures in My Neighbour Totoro. As its name suggests, it takes the form of a gigantic cat whose body functions like a real bus, with several pairs of legs enabling it to move at spectacular speeds.

Its interior features seats for passengers, whilst its eyes can light up the path like headlights. The Catbus also has the ability to traverse the countryside, forests and certain obstacles with a ease that would be impossible for an ordinary vehicle.
