Character background and lore

Izuku Midoriya, better known by his hero name Deku, is the main protagonist of My Hero Academia. In a world where the majority of the population possesses a supernatural ability known as an Alter, Izuku was born without any powers.

Despite this lack of an Alter, he has dreamt since childhood of becoming a hero capable of saving others with a smile, just like his idol, All Might.

His determination and heroic instinct eventually catch the attention of All Might himself. All Might recognises in Izuku the qualities needed to become his successor and passes on his own Alter to him: One For All. The film’s official website explicitly states that Deku was born without an Alter before inheriting All Might’s One For All.

One For All is a particularly powerful ability that accumulates and passes on its power from one user to another. Initially, however, Izuku’s body is unable to withstand its full power, and any excessive use risks causing serious injury.

His training at Yuei High School therefore involves not only becoming a true hero but also learning to gradually control this exceptional power.

As he progresses, Deku develops various ways of harnessing One For All and gains enough experience to face increasingly dangerous opponents alongside Katsuki Bakugo, Shoto Todoroki, Ochaco Uraraka and the other pupils in Class 1-A.

In *My Hero Academia: You’re Next*, the story takes place after the events of the war that profoundly shook hero society. Whilst Japan is still largely in ruins, a mysterious man resembling All Might appears and presents himself as a new symbol: Dark Might.

Dark Might uses his Quirk to create a gigantic fortress and allies himself with the criminal organisation, the Gorrini Family. Deku, Bakugo, Todoroki and the other students at Yuei must then confront this new threat to prevent this false successor to All Might from imposing his own vision of the symbol of peace.

The film thus delves directly into one of the central themes of My Hero Academia: what truly defines a hero, and who is worthy of inheriting All Might’s legacy?
