Character background and lore

Shoto Todoroki is a pupil in Class 1-A at Yuei High School, the institution responsible for training future professional heroes. He is one of the most talented pupils in his year group and is known for his calm, serious and particularly determined personality.

His Quirk, known as Ice and Fire, allows him to produce powerful flames with the left side of his body and generate ice with his right side. This hybrid ability stems from his parents’ powers and gives him great versatility, whether for attacking, immobilising his opponents or altering his surroundings.

Shoto is the sonof Endeavour, a professional hero who has long sought to surpass All Might. His father has structured his upbringing to mould him into a hero capable of surpassing the Symbol of Peace, subjecting him to particularly gruelling training from childhood onwards.

Shaped by his family history, Todoroki initially refuses to use his flames, which he associates with his father. However, his clash with Izuku Midoriya during the Yuei Sports Championship leads him to realise that this power belongs to him and that he is free to choose how to use it.

During the fourth season, Todoroki continues his training and, in particular, has to take extra classes in order to obtain his provisional hero licence. These challenges enable him to improve the way he communicates with others and to better understand the responsibilities that come with being a hero.

Despite his aloof demeanour, Shoto proves loyal to his classmates and gradually seeks to free himself from the burden of his past. His development relies as much on mastering his two powers as on his determination to forge his own identity as a hero.
