In Hayao Miyazaki’s eponymous masterpiece released in 1988, My Neighbour Totoro, the Blue Totoro — whose real name is ‘Chū-Totoro’ — is a middle-aged forest spirit (around 679 years old) who often accompanies the large grey Totoro. Slightly smaller and much livelier than his elder, he is recognisable by his turquoise-blue colour and the small canvas bag filled with acorns that he regularly carries over his shoulder. His path crosses that of young Mei as he attempts to slip quietly across the courtyard of the house in the company of the little white Totoro. Although he is shy and easily startled by the slightest noise, his mischievous presence plays an active part in opening the doors to the magical world, invisible to the two sisters’ eyes.
