Origin and character lore

My Neighbour Totoro is an animated film by Studio Ghibli released in Japan in 1988. It was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, with music composed by Joe Hisaishi.

The story follows Satsuki and Mei, two young sisters who move with their father into a house in the countryside. Whilst exploring the surrounding area, they discover forest spirits, including the imposing Totoro and two smaller creatures.

Benevolent and mysterious, the Totoros embody the hidden magic of nature and the imagination unique to childhood. The acorns, leaves and plant life regularly associated with the characters serve as a reminder of their deep connection to the forest, here transposed into a summer setting of a maize field.
