Origin and character lore

My Neighbour Totoro follows Satsuki and Mei Kusakabe, two young sisters who move with their father into an old country house. Their move brings them closer to the hospital where their mother is being treated, but their new home and the neighbouring forest soon have several extraordinary encounters in store for them.

Mei is the first to discover the Totoros whilst following small creatures through the undergrowth. She eventually reaches a huge tree where the Great Totoro rests – a peaceful forest spirit with a round appearance, combining the features of an animal with those of a mythical creature.

Satsuki, in turn, meets Totoro one rainy evening at a bus stop. She lends him an umbrella, and the creature is amused to discover the sound made by the raindrops on the fabric. Shortly afterwards, the Catbus arrives to whisk her away through the night.

The soot sprites visible on the duvet are small, living balls of soot that inhabit old houses and dark places. They usually flee when a home becomes lively and bright again.

The leaves and plant motifs on this duvet directly evoke the forest that protects the Totoros. The design brings together the three sizes of creatures, as well as the soot sprites, in a luminous setting, transforming the bedding into a scene inspired by the film’s benevolent and mysterious natural world.
