Character background and lore

2B, whose full name is YoRHa No. 2 Type B, is one of the central protagonists of the NieR:Automata universe.

She belongs to YoRHa, a military organisation composed of androids tasked with fighting the mechanical lifeforms that occupy a Earth abandoned by humanity.

In this conflict, the human survivors are believed to have taken refuge on the Moon, whilst the androids have been waging a war for generations to reclaim the planet.

2B is a Battler-type unit, specially designed for combat. She excels both in close-quarters combat and in the use of various weapons, and is accompanied by a Pod, a support unit capable of carrying out ranged attacks and relaying information to her.

During her missions, she works primarily alongside 9S, a Scanner unit specialising in reconnaissance, analysis and hacking.

The contrast between the two androids is one of the key elements of their relationship. 2B is cool, disciplined and deeply committed to upholding YoRHa’s rules, whilst 9S is far more curious and expressive.

As their missions progress, however, both discover that the mechanical lifeforms they are fighting are far more complex than they had imagined. Some are beginning to develop behaviours, societies and even emotions that are strangely similar to those of humans.

These discoveries gradually lead 2B and 9S to question the true nature of their mission, their enemies and the YoRHa organisation itself.

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a adapts this universe into an animated series whilst developing certain events and characters in a way unique to the series.
