Origin and symbolism (Lore)

The design featured on this rug is the Jolly Roger of the Straw Hat Pirates, the crew founded and led by Monkey D. Luffy. Like other pirate flags in the One Piece universe, it serves to identify the group, its ships and the territories under its protection.

The design features a skull and crossbones, but replaces the usual menacing appearance with a broad smile. The skull wears the straw hat given to Luffy as a child by Red-Haired Shanks. This item is the captain’s distinguishing mark and symbolises his promise to become a great pirate before one day returning it to its owner.

The first design of the Jolly Roger was created by Usopp shortly after he joined the crew. It subsequently became the shared emblem of Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji and the companions who join them as they journey along the Grand Line.
