Origin and background of the character
Monkey D. Garp, universally known as ‘Garp the Iron Fist’ or ‘the Hero of the Navy’, is one of the major historical figures in the monumental work One Piece, the legendary shōnen manga created by Eiichiro Oda in 1997. A Vice-Admiral respected and feared across all the seas, he is the father of the revolutionary leader Monkey D. Dragon and the biological grandfather of the protagonist Monkey D. Luffy, as well as the adoptive grandfather of Portgas D. Ace. Famous for having hunted down the Pirate King Gol D. Roger on equal terms and putting an end to the Rocks Pirates’ activities during the God Valley incident, Garp consistently refuses promotion to Admiral in order to retain his freedom of action. Devoid of a Devil Fruit, he fights exclusively with his bare hands, infusing his fists with a super-powerful Armament Haki capable of shattering mountains or hurling giant cannonballs with the strength of his arms. Banpresto’s “Senkozekkei” collection captures the ferocity of his martial arts techniques through a finely crafted sculpture that highlights his grey hair, the scar over his left eye and the fluid movement of his large Navy officer’s coat.
