To save the life of his unconscious captain from the implacable Grand Corsair Bartholomew Kuma, Zoro agrees to sacrifice his own life by absorbing, through Kuma's powers, all the pain and fatigue accumulated by Luffy during his battles. Shortly afterwards, Sanji finds him in the middle of a bloodbath, standing but on the verge of death. Zoro then utters the cult line that has become legendary in the manga: "Nothing happened at all ", concealing his sacrifice to preserve the honour and cohesion of the crew.
