Origin and background of the character

Monkey D. Luffy is the central protagonist of the One Piece manga and anime series, created by the mangaka Eiichiro Oda in 1997. The story is set in a fictional maritime world dominated by piracy. Having accidentally eaten a Devil Fruit (the Gum-Gum Fruit) during his childhood, Luffy developed the ability to make his body stretch like rubber, in exchange for losing his ability to swim. As the founder and captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, he sails the world’s seas alongside his travelling companions with the aim of discovering ‘One Piece’, a legendary treasure, in order to claim the title of King of the Pirates.
