Character background and lore

Shanks the Red is the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates and one of the Four Emperors who rule the seas of the New World. In his youth, he was a ship’s boy aboard Gol D. Roger’s ship alongside Baggy. Despite his often laid-back and carefree demeanour, he commands immense respect and will not tolerate anyone harming his comrades.

Shanks meets Monkey D. Luffy whilst his crew are staying in the village of Fuchsia. He saves the young boy from a sea monster at the cost of his left arm, then entrusts him with his famous straw hat, asking him to return it once he has become a great pirate. This promise becomes one of Luffy’s main motivations in his quest for One Piece.

Although he rarely intervenes directly, Shanks possesses exceptional mastery of Haki. His mere presence can intimidate powerful opponents, whilst his ability to anticipate events and use King’s Haki makes him one of the most formidable fighters in the world.

He also plays a decisive role at Marineford by bringing an end to the war between the Marines and Whitebeard’s pirates. Later, he once again demonstrates his power by swiftly neutralising Eustass Kid in order to protect the crews under his banner.
