Overgeared focuses on the theme of virtual reality video games (VRMMORPGs), a very popular genre in the world of Korean webtoons and light novels.

Greed begins his adventure as an anti-hero. He's awkward, underappreciated and plagued by failures in his personal life and in the game. However, his development is at the heart of the story. Through luck, he is transformed into a formidable gamer, able to create high quality weapons and armour, which allows him to rise through the ranks. But that's not all that propels him to the top: he combines perseverance and skill to prevail, making his journey more realistic for readers.

In terms of message, the title explores the notions of hard work and social injustice. Greed is often seen as a "loser" because of his repeated failures. His success in the game symbolises a kind of revenge against the unforgiving real world, where success often depends on external circumstances. The game thus becomes both an escape and a mirror of social reality, offering a subtle critique of power hierarchies and inequalities.
