Origin and world of the film (Lore)

Up tells the story of Carl Fredricksen, an elderly widower who decides to fulfil the dream he shared with his wife Ellie: to go and live near Paradise Falls. Refusing to leave their house, which is full of memories, Carl ties thousands of balloons to his roof and turns the house into a flying machine.

However, he discovers that a young explorer named Russell has unwittingly stowed away on board. Their journey takes them to a wild region of South America, where they meet Kevin, a rare, brightly coloured bird, and Dug, a dog wearing a collar that translates his thoughts.

The flying house is one of the film’s central symbols. It represents both Carl’s memories, his love for Ellie and his attachment to the past. During his adventure, he gradually realises that honouring his wife’s memory does not mean giving up on new experiences.

The multicoloured balloons associated with the house convey this idea of escape and a fresh start.
