Origin and character background (Lore)

Sadako Yamamura is the central figure in the Japanese Ring saga, created by the writer Koji Suzuki. KADOKAWA notes that the series began with the novel Ring, published in 1991, and continued with, notably, Spiral, Loop and Birthday.

The character became world-famous thanks to the Japanese film adaptation Ring, released in 1998. The film’s international success helped establish Sadako as one of the leading icons of J-horror, to the extent that KADOKAWA now describes her as a horror character recognised worldwide.

Sadako is closely associated with a curse transmitted via a mysterious video. This simple yet terrifying idea became one of the franchise’s most recognisable concepts and played a major part in Ring’s influence on modern horror cinema.

Her appearance has also become iconic: a young woman dressed in white, whose face is almost entirely hidden behind long black hair. The film adaptations have permanently linked this silhouette with the image of the vengeful Japanese ghost.

The various instalments in the franchise gradually explore Sadako’s origins and the circumstances that led to her transformation. *Ring 0: Birthday*, in particular, is officially presented by KADOKAWA as a prequel revealing why Sadako became a murderous spirit.
