Character background and lore

Shrek is a solitary ogre who lives peacefully in a swamp, far from the villagers who fear him because of his appearance. His daily life is turned upside down when numerous fairy-tale creatures are driven from their homes and sent to his land by Lord Farquaad.

In order to restore peace to his swamp, Shrek agrees to rescue Princess Fiona, who is being held captive in a tower guarded by a dragon. He sets out on this mission accompanied by Donkey, a chatty and enthusiastic companion who gradually becomes his best friend.

During their journey, Shrek and Fiona discover they have more in common than they realised. Beneath his gruff exterior, the ogre proves to be loyal, sensitive and deeply devoted to those he considers his family.

The Shrek saga subverts the traditional conventions of fairy tales by focusing on flawed characters, self-acceptance and the idea that appearances do not always reflect a person’s true character.
