R2-D2 (also known as D2-R2 in the French version of Episode IV) is one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars saga, appearing in all seven films. R2-D2 is a small, egg-shaped robot who speaks in an electronic sound language resembling whistling. He is usually accompanied by his companion C-3PO, a droid who understands him and with whom he forms an amusing duo.
His creator, the British Tony Dyson, died on 3 March 2016 on the Maltese island of Gozo, where he lived.
R2-D2 was brought to life by the diminutive actor Kenny Baker, who sat inside for the first six episodes of the saga. Baker had a consulting role in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
