Origin and character lore

Boos are recurring ghosts in the Super Mario universe. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 and have since haunted numerous mansions, castles and dark levels throughout the series. Their round shape, fangs and long tongue give them an instantly recognisable appearance.

Despite their menacing appearance, Boos are particularly shy. They usually freeze and hide their faces when Mario looks directly at them, before resuming their pursuit as soon as he turns his back. This behaviour forces the player to keep a close eye on their movements and proceed with caution.
