Origin and lore

The Super Star, also known as the Invincibility Star, is one of the best-known power-ups in the Super Mario series. When a character collects it, it temporarily grants them near-total invincibility and allows them to defeat most enemies simply by touching them.

Its activation is usually accompanied by a fast-paced and instantly recognisable tune. For a few seconds, Mario or his ally flashes in different colours and can traverse dangerous areas without sustaining the usual damage. Certain specific obstacles, such as falls or some elements of the scenery, may nevertheless remain lethal.

The Super Star appears as early as the first instalments of the series and subsequently returns in numerous platform, racing and competitive games. Its yellow colour, five rounded points and two black eyes make it an instantly recognisable symbol, even outside the world of video games.
