Origin and background of the symbol (Lore)

Superman hails from the planet Krypton, where he was born as Kal-El. Shortly before the destruction of his homeworld, his parents sent him to Earth aboard a spaceship. Taken in and raised in Kansas by Jonathan and Martha Kent, he grew up as Clark Kent and learnt to use his abilities to help others.

Under the rays of Earth’s yellow sun, Kal-El develops exceptional strength, the ability to fly, superhuman stamina, considerable speed and various sensory powers. He becomes Superman and, amongst other things, protects the city of Metropolis whilst working as a journalist at the Daily Planet.

The symbol on his chest is inspired by the coat of arms of his Kryptonian family, the House of El. According to various interpretations within the DC Universe, it is not merely the initial of ‘Superman’: it also represents hope. The hero thus makes it the emblem of his mission and his desire to inspire the inhabitants of his adopted world.
