Character background and lore

Leafa is the avatar used in the virtual world ofALfheim Online by Suguha Kirigaya, the younger sister of Kazuto Kirigaya, better known by the pseudonym Kirito.

The official Sword Art Online website describes Suguha as Kazuto’s sister and states that she practises kendo at national level. This mastery of the sword partly explains her exceptional skills when navigating virtual reality worlds.

Under the alias Leafa, she belongs to the Sylph race in ALfheim Online. She meets Kirito without immediately realising his true identity and quickly becomes one of his key allies on his journey through the virtual world.

Her combat experience and knowledge of ALfheim Online make her a particularly effective fighter. Leafa mainly uses a sword and combines her physical skills with the abilities specific to the ALO system.

The relationship between Leafa and Kirito is also an important part of her character development. As she gradually discovers who is behind Kirito’s avatar, she must come to terms with her own feelings and her complex relationship with Kazuto.

Throughout the series, Leafa remains a loyal ally to the group and takes part in several adventures alongside Kirito, Asuna, Sinon, Lisbeth, Silica and Klein.

Her role becomes particularly significant in *Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld*. When Kirito finds himself in danger in the Underworld, Leafa joins her companions to come to his aid.

To intervene in this world, she uses the powerful special account of Terraria, the Goddess of the Earth. The official War of Underworld website confirms that she logs into the Underworld under this identity and also highlights her status as Kirito’s younger sister, as well as her exceptional kendo skills.
