Origin and world of the character
The SpongeBob SquarePants character comes from the famous American animated franchise of the same name, created by Stephen Hillenburg in 1999 for Nickelodeon. This new version is inspired by the animated feature The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants and revisits one of Bikini Bottom's most recurring mythical figures: the Flying Dutchman. Originally, this spectral green pirate ghost haunts the depths of the ocean aboard his ghost ship to terrorise the living and collect their souls in his sacred sock. Seeing Sponge Bob sporting the costume and powers of this otherworldly captain creates a memorably burlesque contrast, perfectly enhanced by the phosphorescent effect (GITD) that recalls the ectoplasmic aura of the original series.
