Created in 1978 by Rumiko Takahashi in the cult manga Urusei Yatsura, Lum is an alien princess from the Oni race. She arrives on Earth when her race decides to invade the planet, offering humans a chance of salvation through a computer duel. The fate of the world is then, by chance, entrusted to Earth’s most unlucky and womanising high school student, Ataru Moroboshi. Following a memorable misunderstanding during his victory, Ataru shouts with joy whilst thinking of his girlfriend, but Lum interprets his words as a formal marriage proposal. Falling head over heels in love with him, she settles on Earth and proclaims herself his lawful wife. With the ability to fly through the air and generate powerful electric shocks whenever she is jealous or angry, Lum turns the young man’s daily life into a state of constant farcical chaos, becoming one of the most iconic female characters in the history of Japanese animation.
