Origin and character lore

Pennywise, also known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown, is one of the most famous incarnations of the malevolent entity created by Stephen King in his novel *It*. This ancient creature frequently takes the form of a clown to lure and terrorise its victims, particularly children.

The series *It: Welcome to Derry* serves as a prequel to the films *It* and *It: Chapter Two*. Set in the early 1960s, it delves deeper into Pennywise’s origins and the supernatural events that periodically afflict the small town of Derry, Maine.

Pennywise is intimately linked to the town and appears to return in a recurring cycle to feed on the fear of its inhabitants. His clown-like appearance is merely a façade: the entity is capable of taking on many forms depending on the phobias of his victims.
