Character origin and lore

The Renounced, known as ‘Relinquished’ in English, is a Level 1 Ritual Monster with the DARK Attribute and Magician Type. Despite its initial stats of 0 ATK and 0 DEF, its effect makes it particularly dangerous: once per turn, it can target a monster controlled by the opponent and equip it to itself, then adopt that monster’s ATK and DEF values.

It is traditionally Ritual Summoned using the Ritual Spell Card ‘Black Illusion Ritual’, which requires you to Tribute a Level 1 or higher monster from your hand or the field. When a monster is equipped to The Renounced, the latter can also use that creature as a shield: if The Renounced were to be destroyed in battle, the equipped monster is destroyed in its place. Any battle damage taken in this situation can also be reflected back to the opponent.

In the original Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, The Renounced is strongly associated with Maximillion Pegasus, creator of the Monster Duel and a major opponent in the Kingdom of Duelists arc. Its unsettling appearance and its ability to absorb opponent’s monsters fit perfectly with Pegasus’s playing style, which is based on unusual cards and strategies designed to unsettle his opponents.
