Origin and character background (Lore)

Coraline is a stop-motion animated film directed by Henry Selick and adapted from the novel by Neil Gaiman. Released in 2009, it is LAIKA’s first feature film.

The story follows Coraline Jones, a curious and adventurous young girl who moves with her parents into an old house called the Pink Palace. Coraline soon realises that her new home hides far more than its occupants seem to realise.

Upon stepping through a small secret door, she discovers a parallel world populated by seemingly perfect versions of her loved ones.The Other Mother is particularly attentive and promises Coraline a more fun-filled life, but her button eyes and increasingly threatening behaviour reveal the true nature of this world.

When the Other Mother tries to hold her captive, Coraline must draw on her courage and wits to save her real parents and escape from this deceptive world. Her determined nature and love of exploration make her a heroine capable of facing her fears despite her young age.
