Light Yagami is the main protagonist of the manga and animated adaptation Death Note, created by scriptwriter Tsugumi Ōba and illustrator Takeshi Obata. A brilliant and gifted student, his life is turned upside down when he accidentally picks up the "Death Note", a supernatural notebook misplaced by the god of death (Shinigami) Ryuk. Discovering that the artefact can eliminate anyone whose name is written in it, Light decides to use this power to execute criminals the world over and purge society of its corruption. Operating secretly under the pseudonym "Kira", his ambition is to build a utopian world free of evil, of which he would proclaim himself the god.
