As part of Funko’s festive collection, this figurine is inspired by the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), a traditional Mexican celebration of Mesoamerican origin during which families honour the memory of the deceased. The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), an amphibian endemic to Mexico, has a strong historical link to Aztec mythology, where it embodies Xolotl, the god of transformation, rebellion and the dead, who transformed himself to escape sacrifice. During these festivities, skull motifs (calaveras) and marigold (cempasúchil) floral decorations serve as visual markers to guide and celebrate the souls.

This Funko Pop! creation recreates the aesthetic and decorative elements of this festival. The axolotl is depicted with a black base coat, contrasting with white painted patterns evoking a stylised skeletal structure on its face and body. Its head is framed by its characteristic plume-shaped external gills, tinted in bright pink and turquoise hues and adorned with multicoloured geometric and floral patterns. The figurine is depicted in a stable, all-fours posture, its eyes adorned with flower-petal motifs, reflecting the traditional artistic conventions of this celebration.
