The character of Vaiana (Moana in the original version) is the heroine of the 56th Disney Studios animated classic, Vaiana: The Legend of the End of the World, released in cinemas in 2016. Directed by acclaimed filmmakers Ron Clements and John Musker, the film is loosely based on Polynesian mythology. The story takes place on the fictional island of Motunui, in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean. Vaiana is a daring, tenacious young girl with a passion for sailing, chosen by the ocean itself to embark on a mystical quest to save her people from an ecological curse. To succeed, she must defy her father's ban, sail beyond the protective reef and convince the shape-shifting demigod Maui to return the heart of the goddess of nature, Te Fiti.
