Origin and backstory of the characters (Lore)

Inside Out is set largely within the mind of Riley Andersen, an eleven-year-old girl whose family moves from the American Midwest to San Francisco. Her daily experiences are guided from the Mind from within by five main emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust.

Joy sees her mission as keeping Riley happy. Optimistic, energetic and inventive, she tries to turn every difficulty into an opportunity for fun. She naturally leads the other emotions and attaches great importance to yellow memories, associated with the girl’s happy moments.

Sadness takes an almost opposite approach. Slow, pessimistic and easily discouraged, she initially struggles to understand her purpose. The other emotions often prevent her from intervening, as they fear her influence might turn Riley’s happy memories into painful experiences.

When Riley begins to experience difficulties following her move, Sadness inadvertently touches several memories. A row in Brain District then leads to the expulsion of Joy, Sadness and the essential memories that fuel the islands of Riley’s personality.

The two emotions must traverse the vast regions of her mind to find their way back to the Brain District. Their journey takes them, in particular, to long-term memory, a vast space where millions of memories are stored in the form of coloured spheres. Mind workers there assess the memories and gradually eliminate those that no longer seem useful.

Joy initially tries to retrieve the essential memories on her own, seeing Sadness as a hindrance. Sadness’s lack of energy, her moments of discouragement and her tendency to lie down on the floor regularly slow their progress – a scene humorously captured in this Funko figure.

The journey, however, enables Joy to realise that Sadness is not a useless emotion. Painful memories encourage Riley to ask for help and allow those around her to recognise her distress. Sadness thus creates space for empathy, comfort and connection with others.

This realisation becomes particularly clear when Joy re-examines an important memory: a moment she had believed to be purely happy had actually begun with a sporting defeat and Riley’s grief. It was her parents and her team-mates, who came to comfort her, who subsequently transformed that experience into a positive memory.

Back in the Brain District, Joy finally lets Sadness take control of the console. Riley is then able to express to her parents the pain caused by the move and her desire to return to her old life. This confession brings the family together and creates a memory that, for the first time, blends several emotions.

The scene chosen for this POP! Mini Moment therefore illustrates the comical contrast between the two characters, but it also foreshadows the film’s central message. Joy cannot always drag Sadness along behind her or suppress difficult experiences: the two emotions must learn to work together to support Riley as she grows up.
