Character background and lore

Belle is an intelligent, imaginative young woman with a passion for reading. She lives with her father Maurice in a small village where her independent spirit and curiosity set her apart from the other villagers. She dreams of adventures and a life beyond what those around her envisage for her.

The fountain scene appears at the beginning of *Beauty and the Beast*. Belle has just borrowed a book she particularly enjoys and settles down to continue reading. Absorbed by the story, she recounts to several animals the passages that capture her imagination, notably the encounter between a heroine and a mysterious prince.

This sequence immediately reveals several key aspects of her personality. Belle does not simply read for entertainment: books allow her to discover new places, imagine other lives and challenge the narrow expectations of those around her. Disney emphasises that stories offer her new perspectives and fuel her desire for adventure.
