Character background and universe (Lore)

Ariel is a young mermaid princess living in the underwater kingdom of Atlantica. The daughter of King Triton, she is known for her independent spirit, her curiosity and her fascination with the human world, collecting objects found at the bottom of the ocean. Disney describes her as a determined heroine who is constantly seeking to discover new treasures and gain a better understanding of the world around her.

She shares her adventures with Polochon, an affectionate but sometimes timid tropical fish, as well as with Sebastian, the crab tasked by King Triton with looking after her. Despite her father’s prohibitions, Ariel regularly swims to the surface and eventually rescues Prince Eric after his shipwreck.

Eager to join the world above the water, she strikes a deal with the sea witch Ursula. Ursula offers her human legs in exchange for her voice, on condition that Ariel receives a true kiss of love before the deadline expires. Disney presents this decision as the starting point for an adventure in which Ariel must show courage and determination to restore the balance between the land and sea realms.

Ariel eventually manages to thwart Ursula’s plans with the help of her friends and Prince Eric. Her journey also leads King Triton to better understand his daughter’s aspirations and to accept her desire to live amongst humans.

Thanks to her curiosity, her love of adventure and her determination to choose her own path, Ariel has become one of the most recognisable heroines in the Disney Princess collection.
