House Lannister is one of the great houses of the Seven Crowns, and the principal house of the Western Lands. Their seat is Casterly Rock, but there is another branch that resides in Lannisport. Their coat of arms is a golden lion roaring on a scarlet field. Their official motto is "I roar". However, their unofficial motto, which is also well known, is 'A Lannister always pays his debts'. The Governor of the West is a Lannister by tradition.

Blond, tall and handsome, the Lannisters contain the blood of the Andal adventurers who carved out a mighty kingdom in the hills and valleys of the West. Thanks to the female line, they boast descent from Lann the Foxy, the legendary trickster of the Age of Heroes who duped the members of House Casterly into taking Casterly Rock from them in the days of the First Men.

The house fell on hard times during the reign of Lord Tytos, but the power of its former glory was regained through his son, Lord Tywin. His daughterCersei is Queen to King Robert Baratheon, while her twin Ser Jaime is a knight in Robert's Kingsguard. Members of the family tend to have golden hair and emerald green eyes.
