Whilst official history records him as having died during the Battle of Hakodate in 1869, the manga imagines that he survived in secret, imprisoned for decades in the notorious Abashiri prison. Released at the dawn of the 20th century, this legendary samurai, though ageing, retains Herculean physical strength and absolute mastery of the sword (katana) and firearms. Driven by an unwavering political ambition to establish an independent republic in Hokkaidō—to provide a sanctuary for the last samurai and to fend off the influence of the Meiji government— he leads a faction of formidable convicts in search of the Ainu’s hidden treasure of gold.
