Origin and character background
Dobby is a house-elf originally enslaved by the cruel Malfoy family. Defying the rules and subjecting himself to severe corporal punishment for disobeying his masters’ orders, he attempts to protect Harry Potter from his second year onwards by warning him of the dark dangers threatening Hogwarts. At the end of that school year, the young wizard traps Lucius Malfoy by hiding a sock in Tom Riddle’s diary, thereby breaking the elf’s bond of servitude. Now free, Dobby shows boundless devotion to his friends. He performs a heroic act by coming to the rescue of Harry, Ron and Hermione, who have been captured at Malfoy Manor—an ultimate act of bravery in which he sacrifices his life under the blows of Bellatrix Lestrange.
