Origin and character background
The Death Eaters are a faction of pure-blood dark wizards devoted to the cause of Lord Voldemort, bearing the Dark Mark on their forearms and concealing their identities beneath long hooded cloaks. Whilst many of these followers join out of a belief in supremacy, others join the ranks out of sheer cowardice or fear of reprisals, much like Peter Pettigrew. Responsible for acts of extreme violence throughout wizarding history, such as the murder of the Prewett brothers or the torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom, they spread terror by projecting their master’s symbol into the sky after each crime. When their leader first fell, several of them escaped from Azkaban prison by claiming involuntary submission under the Imperius Curse, whilst others, such as Igor Karkaroff, negotiated their freedom with the Ministry of Magic by handing over the names of their former accomplices.
