Haymitch Abernathy is a former Hunger Games winner from District 12. He won the 50th Hunger Games – also known as the second Quarter Quell – in a particularly deadly edition featuring twice as many tributes as in the regular Games.

His experience in the arena and the consequences of his victory left a deep mark on him. Years later, he became the designated mentor for the District 12 tributes, a role that led him to accompany Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark during the 74th Hunger Games.

Behind his sarcastic demeanour and alcoholism, however, lies a man of exceptional intelligence, keen observation and an understanding of the political machinations of the Capitol.
